Vemric Enterprises at the 2025 Devolution Conference: Driving Equity and Inclusion in the Blue Economy
Vemric Enterprises was honored to take part in the 2025 Devolution Conference in Homabay County, held under the theme *_“For the People, For Prosperity: Devolution as a Catalyst for Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice.”_*
Together with the County Government of Siaya, we showcased our value-added fish products — *Omena (Dagaa)*, Nile Perch Fillets, and Whole Frozen Tilapia. Participants also experienced the taste of our hygienically harvested, ready-to-eat Omena ,once viewed as a ”poor man’s” food but now proudly featured in five-star hotels. This reflects how improved handling transforms a traditional delicacy into a safe, high-quality product.
Our fish processing facility has been instrumental in tackling one of the sector’s biggest challenges: post-harvest losses. By introducing cold storage solutions, proper drying techniques, hygienic handling, and value addition, we ensure fish reaches markets fresh, safe, and profitable. This has increased incomes for the fisherfolk we work with in the lake basin by 13%, while enhancing food security and nutrition.
The conference highlighted that only 4% of fish landing sites in Kenya have cold chain facilities, underscoring the urgent need for investment in infrastructure. It also addressed the underinvestment in small-scale fisherfolk and the persistent vices along the lake, such as the sex-for-fish trade. At Vemric, we are at the forefront of campaigning against such exploitation, while creating dignified opportunities for women and youth in the fish value chain — including initiatives like rent-to-own boats for women.
*Our Commitment*
Devolution’s promise of equity and inclusion is what drives our mission. By improving fish handling, reducing losses, and adding value, we empower communities along Lake Victoria and contribute to a more just, prosperous, and sustainable blue economy.
